Shape up: Keep exercising and don’t let your body get in the red

We’re all cutting back, but sacrificing your fitness regime is a false economy

With the world economy still in such a fragile state, stress levels continue to rise as employees are faced with the prospect of redundancies, pay cuts and the cancellation of bonuses.

Company leaders and employees work longer hours and forego their fitness regime in an attempt to rebuild and remodel a company to keep it in the black. However, if you make the decision to offer up your fitness routine as the sacrificial lamb to save on finance, you do so at your peril. Health is your most valuable asset.

A recent study by Kate W Strully, published in a journal called Demography, studied statistics from three years and came to the conclusion that when people lose their jobs, they are 83pc more likely to develop a new health condition, such as heart disease or diabetes.

During tough economic times the emotional drain can affect your health dramatically. It is therefore important to take advantage of a bad situation and turn it around to become even more productive. As the saying goes: Make hay when the sun shines. So if you have more free time on your hands now, make good use of it.

The study also said that even those who later found a job were more likely to have a new health problem, compared to those with stable employment.

The research did not include the workout habits of its participants, but it did illustrate that it is extremely important for those without jobs to work out.

A lack of exercise can lead to a gradual increase in body fat and, as fat stores toxins, it increases your risk to other dangerous health problems such as cardiovascular disease and cancers.

Now is not the time to rest, whether you are employed or not. Now is the time to get ready for war, and improve your physical and mental capabilities. You need to make a personal change and learn from champion athletes and soldiers.

In business, we are athletes on the field of commerce. Athletes go through intense physical and mental preparation for the challenges that lie waiting for them. But the reality is that people are not playing at their best in the field of health. In this age of dramatic distraction, it has never been more important to focus on health and vitality. Lack of time for exercise is a lame excuse.

Technology is a beautiful tool but so many people use it unconsciously and lose track of time that would be better spent on their health. Internet browsing, mobiles and Blackberries help communication but it is important to know when to put them down. Daily activities like watching TV and gossiping could become more of an addiction if you have extra time on your hands.

We waste our time and finance on activities that yield us little reward but if we invest in our health the benefits will transfer to every area of our life.

You need to develop a schedule and include exercise in it because the things that get scheduled are the things that get done. If you don’t have structure, it’s easy to fall into a trap of ill-health, especially if you are unemployed.

There is nothing more important than keeping balance in mind, body and spirit. For the sake of your health and strength, nothing beats exercise.

Take this opportunity to get in the best shape of your life. Don’t procrastinate, as exercise has been proven to reduce stress and improve energy levels. It will also help you be more productive and it fosters creativity.

When you get the opportunity for employment, the interviewer will notice that you are fit and have more energy and hence this will increase the likelihood that you will get hired. Make time for health as Ben Franklin says “While we may not be able to control all that happens to us, we can control what happens inside us“.
