Dublin Bootcamp: Put your body back in the black

It’s the dawn of a new year. While some people have woken up each morning over the holidays with a massive hangover, there are those of us who view the new year with great optimism. Sure, last year produced some stressful times in a changing economy but I like to view the past experiences as lessons.

When you reflect on the past year, you can view and rate your performance in different fields and, more specifically, the field of health and fitness. In an attempt to communicate with my clients in terms they understand, I like to compare fitness and health to a profit and loss account or a balance sheet.

When a client performs an activity of benefit to their health, like training consistently, eating healthy food and staying hydrated, they make a profit. On the other hand, when they skip training, make excuses, drink alcohol and go off the rails, they make a loss.

At the end of the trading year, your accounts, and your body shape, tell the story as to whether you are in the black or in the red.

As the years progress, consistent poor management of the accounts can lead to a number of possible outcomes. If, after a poor business year, you refuse to adapt and make changes, you can go into receivership where you try to pass the responsibility of your health or business onto doctors or hospitals. The other worst-case scenario is that you can go bust and end up in a cemetery.

How you review your successes or failures will determine the future of You Inc. The American armed forces have an elite unit, the Navy Seals, and they can teach everyone a good lesson. Their training is historically severe to prepare the soldiers physically and mentally for the worst possible scenarios in war.

The Seals go into battle and if they are lucky to return home alive they put the lessons of war they learnt into their personal book, ‘The log of lessons learnt’. This book contains details of the mistakes they made in battle.

Just before the Seals go into battle again, they review the log to ensure that they do not make the same mistakes twice. Their lives depend on learning from their mistakes. In gyms, sports clubs and training grounds around the country, I have witnessed so many people make the same mistakes over and over again and they expect the result to be different.
Science would tell them to stick with weights and interval-style training to achieve their goal and common sense would see them stick to a diet of fresh meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, like their ancestors. The problem with common sense is that it’s not very common.

When you analyse your current eating and training habits and the respective results, you can start on a journey to future health and longevity. If you are unsure of the path you need to take, seek the guidance of a coach or a mentor. It is never too late to make changes to improve your health in our leading Bootcamp in Dublin. The question is, do you have the desire to change?

Studies on people’s regrets on their death beds say the two biggest regrets were that they wished they could have loved more and also they wished they could have met the person they might have been.

Don’t have regrets, review your books for the accounting year. Start your own log of lessons learnt and apply the changes you need to get your body back in the black. It will be hard and tough to break habits. Sometimes it’s hard to leave home — but it needs to be done.
